My PC has gone on strike!

I’ve called in a negotiator (PC Technician) to determine if my PC and I can maintain a relationship much longer.  If we can not find a way to work together, I’m going to need to get a new PC.  In the meantime,  my posts are on hold.

This morning I started out my day happily reading other blogs.  Then I read Leah’s post about Silver and Tough, at 365 Days of Quilting.  I sympathized as I know how painful it is to have a hard drive failure (I’ve had more than my fair share).  I also realized that it has been awhile since I’ve backed up my laptop.  But did I go off and back it up?  No!

After taking photos and getting ready to make a post, I attempted to turn on my PC multiple times.  Black screen each time, with loud beeps.  Reminded me of previous hard drive failures.   Needless to say, I’m now quite sorry I didn’t back my laptop up this morning (or last week, or last month).  Well, I did recently back up my machine embroidery designs and have a good overall backup in early January.  Hymm.

So, I hope this motivates everyone to go backup your PCs and/or laptops tonight!

  1. Oh Noooooo! That’s awful.Unfortunately both Silver and Tough didn’t hold up to snuff, so maybe backup harddrives aren’t the way you should go.I’m trying the online backup program Carbonite to see if it will consistently backup everything without me having to tear my hair out in frustration every day.I’ll be crossing my fingers that this little glitch turns out to be something really small, like just a dead battery or unplugged cord or something.Hang in there!Leah Day

  2. Yes and thank you so much for that reminder. We are so lax about the tech things. Sorry bout your problems and that PC gets to be like one of our friends and when it is not communicating we are not happy..Maggey

  3. Oh I hope the negotiator is a good one & able to help you reach at least a settlement (you get to retreive your data) if not a full reconciliation!I faced a similar hostage situation last fall. I lost 😦

  4. UGH! I am right there with you. I got the dreaded “blue screen” yesterday & again today. I did copy all my files onto a backup this past weekend so I think I’m safe there. But I really, really don’t want to have to go spend the moolah for a new laptop. I would miss my own love/hate struggle with this piece..Good luck my friend…I think we’ll both need it.

  5. I feel your pain. My home/work desktop and I had a falling out in late January just as tax season was taking off for me. It was an operating system problem, not the hard drive, but having had two hard drive crashes in the past, I know what those are like too. I have an external hard drive and was able to run a complete backup to it from the old computer; however, more importantly, I signed up for Carbonite in December. Little did I know that I would have to test it so soon. It worked perfectly! I simply logged in from the new computer once I had it going, installed the Carbonite software and started the restore process. It put everything back where it had previously been. The restore process took a couple of days, and it probably would have been faster to restore from the external hard drive since I also had that, but I liked that Carbonite put everything back in the exact same file structure as I’d had it before so I could easily find things. That said, I had to tweak and move a few things because Windows 7 has a different file structure than XP. But, EVERYTHING was there, including my massive Outlook file I have for work, and all of my pictures from the last 8 years. Sorry this is getting so long. I guess my main point is that I highly recommend Carbonite. If you search the net, you can easily find coupons for a discount. I got 20% off of a 3 year subscription and it was only $103. Well worth the cost in my opinion. Oh, and they have a trial version for 15 days if you want to check it out before buying. Just know that you will have to pay full price if you purchase from the trial so what I did was only did a select backup to test it and then just let the trial expire and bought a new subscription.Hope this helps,Laura

  6. I wanted to thank you for entering my OWOH Giveaway. It was great fun. It was so crazy with so many blogs to visit that it was hard to really take a look at each one. So I invite you to come back and take a look around both of my blogs and see what you think. If you like them, I hope you will consider signing up as a follower and/or placing my blog on your blog list so that you can better keep up with me and know when I post.
