Black Friday/Cyber Monday Holiday Shopping

Last year, about this time, I compiled a list of products that I thought would make great Christmas gifts.  This year, I decided to do some research on Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping for quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts, as well as share insights on some products that I think would make great Christmas gifts.

I believe most everyone is aware that Black Friday (sometimes Green Friday) is a term used to refer to the point in the year where merchants typically feel they are now profitable and Cyber Monday is a day where online sales tend to be at their highest point of the year, at least in the US.  No matter what the definition is, this window tends to be the busiess shopping days of the year.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any Market Research to determine how this all applies to businesses focused on quilting, sewing or embroidery.  So, I set out to do some research on my own and much of this post shares insights with you about some Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales that you might be interested in.

Warning:  This is a long list, but I do think it is worthy of checking.  And, I’ve also included a list of my recommendations for Christmas gifts to quilting friends (or yourself).

This linky list is now closed.

Bloggers will be able to to enter this show by posting their entry on their blog, via a post dated November 14th-21st, and linking their post to the respective mcklinky at the top of this post.  One blog post per blogger, where you can include photos and insights on one or more of your Christmas quilts.  SewCalGal also appreciates if in your blog post, you share insights that you are entering your quilt(s) in the Christmas Quilt Show and include a link back to this post, hopefully encouraging everyone to also have fun viewing all the quilts in this show, in addition to yours.

Non-Bloggers enter their quilts via email, with steps where SewCalGal manually creates a post for each of these entries.  Due to this being a manual step, a deadline was previously announced and has now passed.  But, I’m willing to open up this opportunity for a maximum of 10 more entries, if received by November 20th.  Thus, if you are a non-blogger and want to  be able to enter this show you can email SewCalGal photo of your entry, with brief description.

While this is a Christmas Quilt show, entries are accepted if they are a quilt of any size (includes skinny quilts, aka table runners), have a Christmas or Hanakuh theme, and are quilts or fibre arts.  Entries are also accepted for quilt designs, with approved themes, that are designed in EQ6/EQ7.  For quilt design entries, SewCalGal does ask that bloggers post on their blog, as stated above, and also email their EQ6/EQ7 design.

RULES  (you can do one or more of any of these to enter to win a prize.  To clarify, you do not need to enter a quilt to be able to enter to win a prize. But it certainly will be more fun if you enter a quilt in the show).

1) Enter a quilt(s) in this show and you’ll be entered to win a prize.  To clarify, one post/link per blogger/person, but you can include more than one quilt in your entry, as long as it meets the theme of the show (e.g. Christmas or Hanakuh).

2) Leave a comment on this post and you get an entry (or, for some, an extra entry).

3) Post the badge for this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. {SewCalGal appreciates PR helpers}.

4) Blog about this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. To clarify, this is an option to get an extra entry for those that helped with PR prior to the start of the show and helped to blog about this event, or if you do not have a quilt to enter and want to blog about it to help with PR.  But it isn’t a way for getting an extra point if you enter in the show this week and also create an extra PR post this week.

5) Visit all the quilt entries in this show, as submitted between Nov 14-21, leave a comment on the participating site’s entry,  and you’ll be eligible for an additional entry.  Just come back and leave a comment on this post, lettting me know you’ve viewed all the quilts entered in this show, before noon on the 22nd and you’ll get an extra entry.

6) SewCalGal followers get an extra entry.

7) If you “have been” part of QuiltSue’s (Quilt Times) Christmas Quilt-along in 2010, you get an extra entry.

As I’ll be using a random number generator to select winners, and each comment has a number, please enter a separate comment for each entry you qualify for.  Thank you!

Prizes will be awarded to a blend of those that enter the show vs viewers vs PR helpers, etc. all randomly select at the end of the show. Drawing for prizes will be completed late on the 22nd or early on the 23rd and announced via a post on this blog, no later than the 23rd.  An email will also be sent to each of the winners, where they will have 4 days to respond via email to claim their prize, otherwise another winner will be selected.  IF you have a preference for a particular prize, you may want to include the # of the prize (or your favorite 3 prizes) in your comment(s).  I can’t guarantee, but I’ll try to do the best I can to match prizes to winners’ interest.

No reply bloggers/no reply comments will not be accepted, unless they contain an email address for how to be contacted.

Stash Magic, by Jaynette Huff

badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copy

I’m really enjoying the arrival of spring.  It is especially delightful with all the new book releases.  I’ve particularly enjoyed the new book “Stash Magic, 13 Quilts That Make The Most of Your Fabric Collection“, by Jaynette Huff.   “Stash Magic” is published by Martingale & Company, home of That Patchwork Place.

“Stash Magic” contains thirteen (13) new ways to use up your stash. But, I was so inspired by this book that I could see quilters that go out and buy fabric to create quilts, using the beautiful designs and insights shared in this delightful book.  To clarify, this book is perfect for quilters of all levels, and for those that may want to use fabric in their stash or plan a quilt with new fabrics.  It contains easy to follow instructions with great visuals and photographs.  Jaynette has incorporated insights on many quilting techniques in this book, including paper foundation piecing, english paper piecing and many other tips.  But the specialty that Jaynette shares is various ways that you can use odd scraps of fabrics to create beautiful quilts.

Many quilters become fabric collectors and over time, look for ways to consume fabric in their stash.  This is where Jaynette focused her ideas for “Stash Magic”.  She loves to create scrappy quilts, yet make them look very special.   Clearly, insights in this book go beyond the typical scrap quilt and make a spectacular quilt!

“Scrap Magic” contains full size paper piecing patterns to help you create quilt designs in this book. And the techniques, which Jaynette shares, could easily be adapted to allow you to create unique versions of these designs, as you become a master stash manager!

“Stash Magic” would be a delightful book for any quilter to buy for their library, or to give as a gift.

I’ve always loved scrap quilts, but seriously “Stash Magic” helps you go way beyond the traditional scrap quilt.   This is an inspirational book!  You should be able to find it at your local quilt shop, or at

It’s A Wrap II

I love spring time when everything is new.  I especially love new book releases.  And, I’m so excited to be able to get a copy of “It’s A Wrap II”, by Susan Breier, published by Martingale & Company, home of That Patchwork Place.

Susan’s new book shows her easy method of how to wrap coiling line and fabric to make fantastic bowls, as well as make exciting new shapes, handles, lids and totes.  This book contains 20 new designs with excellent instructions and photos.  There are also many delightful insights that go way beyond the basics, such as insights on how to enhance fabrics with paint.

There are insights on how to make circle baskets, triangle baskets, square baskets, heart shaped baskets,  and more.  I also loved the inspirational insights on embellishing these projects.

And I was certainly inspired by all the insights on how to make purses and totes using her techniques.

Overall, I’m delighted with this new book “It’s A Wrap II“, by Susan Breier.  It is an inspirational book that will help anyone create wonderful bowls, totes and purses for use in their home, or to share as gifts.  I think you’ll love it too!

I was also impressed to learn that the prior version of this book, “It’s A Wrap”, is still in print! Yes, it is in the 10th reprinting, as it is such a popular book.  So, go get a copy of “It’s A Wrap II” soon. I’m sure this book will be a sell out very soon!  And while you are at it, if you don’t already have a copy of the original “It’s A Wrap”, I encourage you to get a copy of it too!

Both books are available for purchase from Martingale & Company.

Comfort & Joy

badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copy
“Comfort and Joy 14 Quilts for Christmas“, by Mary Hickey is a delightful book.  This book offers several designs in colors perfect for the holidays, yet most of these designs would work any time of the year.  This book is published by Martingale & Company, which always does an excellent job producing high quality books.  This particular book is well written and has an excellent balance of photographs & instructions, perfect for all levels of quilters.
Personally, it is difficult for me to select my favorite design in this book, as I love all of them.  I love the “Christmas Star Banner”.  This design is a lovely design for the holidays, as well as any holiday celebration, and to decorate anytime of the year.
The “Ribbon Wreath” quilt is definitely perfect for the holidays, but I can also see this design being adapted for many occassions and color schemes.
And the “Little Forest” design is a spectacular design that clearly works anytime of the year.  But at Christmas, how perfect to display this delightful quilt.
But then I love the Watching for Santa design, and the Midnight Star is gorgeous, and Santa’s Village is delightful, Frolicking Frosties is sew much fun, and the Great Kindergarten Angel Christmas Pageant is a showstopper…..along with all the other delightful designs in this wonderful book.
I’m hoping to keep it a secret until Chrismas morning which projects I make from this delightful book.  But certainly I’ll be making several Christmas gifts using designs & insights from this book, as well as making items to proudly display at my home.  I do hope you’ll join me and have some fun making Christmas gifts and decorations from this special book.
